Angeli Reyes

Sari-sari shop owner, Tagbilaran City

“I took over our family sari sari shop on the ground floor after my husband passed away. Everyone in the barangay comes to me for tips, tricks, treats and even life problems. I have become the agony Tita. I know I can double my sale next year but the rural bank refused my 30,000 peso loan to extend and repair the shop-front twice already. I don’t want to go to the 5-6 but I am sure my suki customers will buy lots more if I can bring in the stocks.”

Runa Bibi

Corner shop owner, Chittagong

“I and my friends run four stores on the other side of the river. After the floods the wholesaler’s agent has not been coming regularly and has also been giving us old stock at higher price. More people from the neighbourhood have been asking if I can order their Daraz requests for electronics and clothes and keep their packages in the spare room during the day. I don’t mind if they pay me 50 taka for my help. It’s one of the advantages of being matric educated. I also see a lot of my customers face problems booking ferry and bus tickets and complain. I could book for them on my phone and make more money at least six months every year”

Maria del Socorro de Ortiz

Window shop owner, Mexico

“I used a loan from my husband’s job to open a small window shop in front of our home 15 years ago. It was my turn to run my own business. When my husband retired, I expanded the store to support my family. I always smile at the nearby school children who come to buy candy. When not running my shop, I am planning for the future and thinking of helping my daughter start her own taqueria.”

Customer stories

Jennifer Maglaque

Philippines

“I moved from the province to Metro Manila to finish my nursing course and try to get a job in UAE. I come late from the hospital and prefer to order my Ariel, Downy and Sunsilk every week in advance on Whatsapp. What a pity Lola Kristine can’t take orders on Whatsapp. I wish she could help me buy gaming credits just like she tops up my SMART airtime.”

Afreen Hossain

Bangladesh

“I must be the best customer of Runa Bibi but she never gives me any special discounts like Daraz does. I feel shy to ask my husband to order for me online from Daraz. Runa Bibi is friendly and always nice to talk to. Plus she has all the latest gossip on the neighbours. I would buy some more items from her if she gave me discounts once in a while and surprised me. I trust her and sometimes share about my kids’ school and mother in law’s health issues with her for advice.”

“I buy only a few items each time I have some minutes free during my day.  A sandwich at lunch-time, toiletries in the afternoon and a bite for dinner on the way home after work.  It would be great if my favorite merchants could have a platform like yufin so I don’t need to carry so much cash and change.  I would like a little time back and maybe some reward points too.”
